North London Tara FC was established in the summer of 2002 by the legendary swordsman Liam 'LJ' Doyle. Encouraged by the example set by his friend and former work colleague Dave Brennan, Liam galvanised a group of individuals who met up each week for a kickabout in the Power League and dragged them kicking and screaming into the lower echelons of the Hendon and District Sunday Football League, where they have remained ever since.
Tara's first season was predictably difficult as some lads struggled to come to terms with playing football with a hangover, while others appeared to struggle to play any football at all. The initial appointment of Damian Osman as player/manager was short-lived as it was thought that he would struggle to combine both roles without killing or being killed by one of his teammates and 'Giant Ginger Eagle' Keith Masterson stepped in to guide the club towards the wooden spoon. Despite finishing beneath both Highgate Albion 3rds and Woodbridge the club took no shame from a season where they had been in touch with most of their opponents for the majority of every match and had only lost by more than one goal on three occasions. The goals tally of Brian 'Rizza' O'Donnell and the overall contribution of Players Player of the Year Dec O'Mahoney bode well for the future while the mid-season signing of striker Noel Burke had proved crucial in helping the club begin winning ways.
Season 2 was a complete reversal of fortunes for Tara as they turned the table on its head, against arguably stronger opposition, to win the league having lost only one game. Several new faces had been brought in to replace the deadwood from season 1, with Super Spaniard Simon Iglesias and Posturing Pretty Boy Adam Welch among them. Adams magnificent goals haul in his first season at the club helped propel Tara towards the top of the table from the off and although a titanic battle with Irish haters Woodlands ensued, Tara took the title in style. Despite speaking fondly of his time at the helm Big Keith stepped down at the end of the campaign in order to look after his young family, but not before he declared Adam his Player of the Year and congratulating Dr Dan on his players award. Youngster Mark Murphy was most improved although i have heard it said that he could hardly have got any worse.
As a result of Keith's departure but with their confidence bolstered by the taste of success Tara careered toward their third season in the third tier of the Hendon League without a leader on the sidelines, and this combined with a step up in terms of ability, Tara came straight back down. With the kit looking tired and the Tara spirit appearing to die some club legends even contemplated retiring from the game; the only thing worth celebrating at the end of the season was its close.Rumours abound that the club would fold and it almost did, but some sterling work from Liam (again) and Club Captain Tim Cooney found new sponsorship from Bar Lulas, a new kit and a new manager as Damo returned to the club having retired from the game following an extreme sports accident in season 1. Chairman Mac's 'knee injury' finally forcing his move upstairs so he could concentrate on his role as Internet Geek while new signings Gavin O'Connor, JP Ryan, Darren Maher, Martin Murphy and Paul Conlon, all on long-term deals, helped to re-establish some much required fighting spirit and footballing ability. With Iggy also making a comeback the club experienced a resurgence of sorts both on and off the pitch, looking odds-on for promotion before collapsing on the home straight like a fat fucking charity runner.
And so to Season 5. There is an undeniable and unique quality to this club, personified by the gentlemanly Liam and Mac but brought about in my opinion also by the fact that 7 players from that first character forming year still remain in the squad. These are Dec, Tim, Rizza, Dan, Mark, Liam and of course Noel. After five years for these lads and Mac to have only been rewarded once for their efforts is wrong, and this year we aim to put it right. The addition of James O'Leary, Pat Keenan and Larry Wren to an already talented bunch including Gavin O'Connor, Darren Dempsey, BIG Darren, JP Ryan, Paul Conlon, Martin Murphy and JOL, has seen the squad increase in strength whilst retaining its distinctly Irish flavour and if the boys hit form they're gonna take some stopping.
